In Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden a young girl named Chiyo is taken through a journey of both heartbreak and happiness. While still children Chiyo and her sister Satsu are sold by their father to a man named Mr.Tanaka. Young Chiyo ends up being sold to a geisha house, where she meets her first geisha, a Japanese hostess trained to entertain men with conversation, dance, and song, named Hatsumomo. Quickly she finds out how awful Hatsumomo is and how hard it is being a geisha in Gion. Struggling with her new life Chiyo clings to her past and plans escape with her sister. After her failed attempt Chiyo is pulled out of her geisha training and becomes the house maid and to make matters worse she is informed her parents have died. However it is then that Chiyo's life begins to turn around, when crying by a stream she meets this man known as the Chairman who becomes her hope and inspiration then and through out her geisha days. Memoirs of a Geisha takes a look at historical Japan and the unique lifestyle of geisha women all the while following Chiyo as she grows up and struggles to find love and her destiny.
